Super Ads!

Well, it’s finally Super Bowl weekend and they’ll play Super Bowl number something, something on Sunday.

I’m picking the New York Giants in a surprisingly easy victory.

Do you actually think a member of the Manning family won’t win in the house that Peyton built? For those who don’t know or care, Super Bowl Something, Something is being played in Lucas Oil Stadium, which just happens to be the home of the Indianapolis Colts, who just happens to have (for the moment) a quarterback by the name of Peyton Manning, who just happens to have a brother named Eli, who just happens to be the starting quarterback for the New York Giants.

Enough of that pre-game breakdown stuff!

On to more importants things, such as the ads!

With an expected record number of viewers on Sunday night the pressure is on for advertising agencies to produce a memorable ad now more than ever.

What will be the most talked about ads on Monday morning?

A thirty second spot will cost millions, but a well done ad will get replayed over and over on talk shows and the internet, so it is more important than ever to come up with the right spot to hit advertising gold!

Some of the classics have been the “E-Trade Baby” spots, the “Crash The Super Bowl” ads by Doritos, numerous ones by Budweiser and of course, Pepsi.

So I can’t wait until Sunday to see what they have in store for us!

But wait!

We don’t have to!

Thanks to some of the ad agencies who wanted to create a little “buzz” prior to Sunday, clips were released early via YouTube and so I thought it would be fun to take a look at a few of my favorites…

Bueller, Bueller

This one had a tease that made everyone think a sequel to the movie was coming out, but instead it is a clever ad for…for…oh what was that car??

Oh yeah, a Honda CRV!

Anyway, Broderick did a great job by sort of reprising his role as Ferris Bueller…

That’s Gold Jerry!

Jerry Seinfeld wasn’t going to let Matthew Broderick have all of the fun. Jerry once again hits the jackpot with the character that made him a sitcom legend…himself!

I loved this ad for…for…

Oh yeah, the Acura NSX!

I think the funniest part was the return of the “Soup Nazi”, however, I think the ad would have been better without Jay Leno. A final punchline of “Newman!” would have been the perfect ending to this spot…

The Force

Finally, an ad that features an over weight dog who realizes he is too heavy to chase a car and is determined to get in shape, gets my vote for most creative. It is a spot for the Volkswagen Beetle and it even manages to bring back a little bit of Volkswagen’s ad history at the end…

By The Numbers

And just in case you think that this early release of the “extended” versions of these ads doesn’t matter, consider this…

As of yesterday afternoon there have been over 8 million views of the Broderick ad, 7.6 million views of Seinfeld spot and 1.2 million of the Volkswagen ad on YouTube!

Like A Good Neighbor

I don’t know if there will be any State Farm Insurance ads during the big game or not, but their ads this season with Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers and his “Discount Double Check” dance have been hilarious! In fact, in case you haven’t noticed, there has been a bit of an “ad war” going on amongst the big insurance companies. In addition to the State Farm spots, Farmers Insurance has been running some funny ads with it’s “Farmer’s University” and of course the Allstate “mayhem” spots are great!

Yeah, I know…I didn’t forget about Geico.

Phil…Phil…

Yesterday, thousands of people gathered at Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania to see what groundhog, Puxatony Phil’s “prediction” for the remainder of winter would be. Officially, he “saw” his shadow and thus predicted six more weeks of winter!

Big deal…

In my Minnesota backyard yesterday, which currently is snowless, I saw a gopher pop up out of his hole wearing a “Speedo” and looking for sunscreen!

What winter?

Upon Further Review…

Super Thoughts

I realized this past Super Bowl Sunday that less is more when it comes to the pre-game shows. I tuned in about fifteen minutes before kickoff and found I was STILL able to understand what was happening during the game. I was also able to get some things done prior to the game, so the day wasn’t a total waste! Just don’t tell anyone at NBC or ESPN I said that!

Let me be the first to say I think Kelly Clarkson sang the national anthem beautifully!

But…

It would be shame if Jim Cornelison does not get a chance to perform it at a future Super Bowl. In my opinion, no one does it better!

Watch this video and tell me you don’t get goose bumps!

Halftime

Madonna… a good job of dancing, a great job of lip synching!

My message to MIA…right back at ‘ya!

I did think it was funny that the NFL tried to blame NBC for letting the picture air despite, a seven second delay . The halftime show was after all, an NFL production, not NBC’s!

Since, big name performers can’t seem to be trusted during a twelve minute performance, I say it’s time for a “Up With People” reunion at next year’s halftime!

A Message From Our Sponsors

Simply, the worst year for Super Bowl ads!

The best ones were leaked early on “YouTube”, which meant no super surprise during the game! Not to mention, many of them did not live up to Super Bowl standards. It did mean bathroom breaks were free of the feeling you were missing something!

Easy Does It

You read it here last week!

My prediction was the Giants would win an easy one!

Well, Mario Manningham sure made it look easy when he caught Eli manning’s pass late in the fourth quarter which led to the go ahead points for New York.

And it doesn’t get any easier than when the other team lets you score! I know, I know, New England wanted the ball back with some time left on the clock, but Ahmad Bradshaw made it look EASY!

All In The Family

In case any of the networks are looking for an analyst, might I suggest Gisele Bundchen.

She was spot on in her candid insight of New England’s and her husband’s performance on Sunday!

aka…Mrs. Tom Brady!

Party On

Note on future treatment for high ankle sprains to the Patriot’s trainer…

Administer large amounts of alcohol and send player to nearest dance floor for therapy.

Seemed to work for Rob Gronkowski!
